When Michael Jackson died in June, sales of his music took off dramatically. At one point nine out of 10 of the spots on the Billboard pop charts were either albums from his solo career or from his work with the Jackson 5.
In addition, the rehearsal footage from what was to be a series of comeback shows in London was packaged into a movie dubbed “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” which went on to take in $252 million worldwide after its release in late October, according to boxofficemojo.com.
Over the holiday weekend a new video for the song “This Is It,” directed by Spike Lee, was released. The song is from the double disc album “This Is It.” In it, shots of Gary, Ind., Jackson’s hometown, are interspersed with shots of him performing as a precocious child and as a boyish adult. Fans are seen signing memorials to him and posing with his signature sparkling single glove. A glove that he wore sold at auction recently for $350,000. The video ends with the glove and black fedora, another signature item, resting on a stool under a spotlight.
This is not Lee’s first time directing a Jackson video. Lee directed “They Don’t Care About Us” from Jackson’s 1995 release “HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I.”
